Concert with the RSPO Orchestra Academy

Since 2016, an orchestra academy has been affiliated with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The international RSPO Orchestra Academy is a one-year advanced academic programme for young musicians. The programme is run in collaboration with the Department of Music and Art at Linnaeus University in Växjö.

Under the guidance of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal players, the musicians receive coaching individually, in chamber music and in orchestral playing. They also present themselves in a number of public chamber concerts – as here, with this year’s academy students in a programme showcasing the many possibilities of chamber music.

The programme includes duos for trumpet and horn, flute and bassoon, and clarinet and viola, with music ranging from Benjamin Staern’s humorous Two Grumpy Old Men to Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Bach-inspired Bachianas brasileiras No. 6 and Rebecca Clarke’s Prelude and Allegro.

A highlight is the world premiere of a new work for trumpet and wind ensemble by Joakim Agnas, principal trumpet of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. We also hear Haydn’s elegant divertimento for horn, violin and cello, and Robert Muczynski’s Fragments for three wind instruments. The concert concludes with Arnold Bax’s quintet for oboe and string quartet, featuring influences from Irish folk music.
