Concert with the RSPO Orchestra Academy

Since 2016, an orchestra academy has been affiliated with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The international RSPO Orchestra Academy is a one-year advanced academic programme for young musicians. The programme is run in collaboration with the Department of Music and Art at Linnaeus University in Växjö.

Under the guidance of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal players, the musicians receive coaching individually, in chamber music and in orchestral playing. They also present themselves in a number of public chamber concerts – as here, with this year’s academy students.

We hear three works spanning three centuries. Joseph Haydn was the great pioneer of the string quartet, and his String Quartet in C major Op 20 No 2 displays the inventiveness and playfulness that made him a model for generations of composers.

The German Romantic composer August Klughardt wrote his melodically rich Wind Quintet in C major towards the end of the nineteenth century. Today, the work is part of the standard repertoire for wind quintet.

The programme concludes in our own time with the American composer Eric Ewazen, born in 1954. His Mandala is colourful, rhythmically vibrant music for the unusual combination of flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin and cello.
